Double-Page Spread Comparison

Conclusion

In cocnlusion, from comparing both of these double page spreads and seeing what qualities they both have, have given me ideas on how I want to style my double page spread. I prefer the Q magazine style of double page spreads (the Tine Tempah one) because I think that the layout is nice and neat and also I like the contrast of an image on one side and picture on the other. Although the Swedish House Mafia is just as good, I prefer the idea of having an interview based theme

Photography/ Mise en scene

The photography between the two double spreads I have chosen is different. In the Swedish House Mafia double spread the photo is on both pages and acts as a background for the writing on the second page and the writing is placed underneath the DJs.  The photo shot taken of the Swedish House Mafia is a long shot as you can see them clearly on stage performing and the image of the stage is taken onto the second page too, this may emphasise the importance of the group and their performances and how they are ‘super star djs’. Also, there is a Swedish flag in the corner which represents them and their background and it shows how were they are from is important. Although, their outfit is not very clear you can still see that they’re wearing t-shirts. Their non-verbal communication, with their hands up in the air shows that they are all about having fun and dancing and that is what they reflect in their music and what gets the crowd in the groove. On the Tinie tempeh page, it’s not through the two pages it’s only on one and on other side of the page there are questions. The image shot is a medium long shot which only goes down to his waist and shows his outfit which can show how he is and his music can be represented in that. He is wearing sunglasses which is his signature accessory and is wearing a jacket and it looks like he is shouting. His facial expression shows his fun side and that’s also represented from the style of music he does. The colours used are dark, however, he still stands out from the pink, blue and black background.

Headline

The headline for Tinie Tempah is ‘UK HIP HOPS BRIGHTEST STAR IS ALITTLE BIT COUNTRY’ (although he has recently over the past 2 years gone to make music that is associated as dance music) although there are no technical linguistic devices within this, it still draws the reader in because of the use of the words ‘brightest stars’ which emphasise his success within the music industry. The word ‘country’ is a word that you would expect to be linked with Tinie Tempah as he is a dance/hip hop star with very upbeat and catchy songs, so this headline would automatically draw in the reader as he likes another type of music that’s far from his own and would intrigue the reader. The headlines font is in a red and contrasted with the white background. Whereas or The Swedish House Mafia, the headline is placed across the two pages and is a large bold font. This is done deliberately and it emphasises what the headline says ‘SUPERSTAR DJs’ it emphasis the fact they have done really well and their music had been amazing and the talent they have has acceded the standards and is way up there. The fact that it’s spread out over the two pages shows that they are very important, more important that other artists.

Standfirst

There is no standfirst on the double page spread (DPS) that has Tine Tempah, this may be for various reasons such as, the article is interview based so may not need a standfirst, or because the headline itself is very effective. On the contrast, the DPS  with the Swedish House Mafia, the standfirst is longer and is all to do with how the band and the exprience of them will be fun.

Columns/amount of text

In the double page spread of Tine Tempah, there are two columns with is being split apart into 16 questions that have been asked about Tine Tempah. There is a reasonable amount of text there, not too much but also not too little. The questions help the reader to get to know him a bit better as there are a lot of surprising facts about him. The column is set out neatly and is that of a good width.  Whereas, for The Swedish House Mafia there are 3 columns and again, a good width like the Tine Tempah one. It gives an insight into the Swedish House Mafia and is about all their success and about why they do what they do etc.… which tells the reader how they are and what they’re about. Both the double page spreads contain a pull quote. Tine Tempeh’s pull quote is  “Lionel Riche told me not to get married” you can straight away see that they’re going to be a good story in that and you know that questions about his future plans will be asked, this is more personal so the reader would get to know him on that personal level.  This is in a white text, different to the headline which is red but that’s all to make it stand out from the dark background.  The Swedish House Mafia pull quite is a lot longer: “… here we go! To Miami (but not Ibiza) with SWEDISH HOUSE MAFIA, the Scandinavians dance titans who out-rock’n’roll most rock’n’roll bands. Booze will flow, crew members will be fired and interlopes will be offered a fist to eat. They are dance ‘titans’ referring to a classical mythology, it shows that they have great power and influence. Also, they ‘out-rock’n’roll rock’n’roll bands’ shows that their music has gotten to everyone and that they are the most successful people out there.
